Introduction

Colca is one of the major tourist destinations in Peru; located at the northeast end of Arequipa in the province of Caylloma. Colca comes from the words Collaguas and Cabanas, two ethnic groups that lived along the Colca River. It is also the second deepest canyon in the world with 4,150 meters, after the Cotahuasi Canyon.

The province of Caylloma, generically known as “Colca”, is part of the department of Arequipa in Peru and is located in the extreme northeast of this region. The province’s main scenery is the Colca Canyon and it is in its surroundings that the towns that identify it have settled.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Colca Canyon Tour 1 Day

The transportation will pick you up very early from your hotel to leave Arequipa in the direction of the city of Chivay, in a 4 hour road trip. We will start with the arrival to Yanque where we will have our breakfast (box breakfast).

From here, more recovered from the early wake up and the long trip, we will continue our journey to the Cruz del Condor, nesting place of these birds that reach up to 3 m with their wings outstretched. We will be able to visit the viewpoint and observe them in flight.

We will also be able to appreciate the Colca Valley in all its splendor and the pre-Inca terraces that to this day are used for planting grains and other crops.

During the return trip to Chivay, we will make several stops at different natural viewpoints. At the viewpoint of Choquetico, we will see the remains of the tombs built by the Collaguas culture around 1200 A.D. and located on the opposite side of the canyon, as well as the pre-Inca stones of Choquetico, with carvings of the map of the land on one side and on the other, carvings of terraces.

We will also stop at the village of Pinchollo, and the viewpoints of Lito and Antahuilque to admire the depth of the canyon and some of the lakes in the area.

Afterwards, we will go again to Chivay, where we will stop for lunch in a tourist restaurant. After this, we will take our vehicle to start the return trip to Arequipa, but not before making a couple of stops at the Mirador de los Volcanes, located at 4910 m.a.s.l. and from where we have a privileged view of the volcanoes that surround the area.

We will also stop at the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve, a wetland where you can see vicuñas and alpacas. Afterwards, we will not stop until we reach the center of Arequipa, where our tour ends.
